Kalan

A kingdom in cultural isolation, its capital lies on the southern tip of ______. Kalan is one of the largest centers of commerce in the south. This has remained so despite its troubled history. After the cataclysm known as the Jade Wind, which petrified the forests of Echovald, and turned the Verdant Sea to pure jade, commerce only grew as people eagerly sought out these strange new resources. An aspect that kept Kalan stable for a time. Still the city has problems with overpopulation, with no quick solution as people returning to their lands found them infested with unnatural beings, like gargoyles and “stone wisps”. Upon the western borders the tengu tribes, who up until recently had been peaceful, began an unprovoked- almost migratory- attack on what lands had remained unaffiliated, forcing more refugees to flee into the safety of the capital. With his city already overrun with refugees, and the resulting urban sprawl of scrapped together shelters, the Kalanise situation has become dire.
Though ruled by their “divine emperor”, who is wise, compassionate, and just. Yet the emperor is himself little more than a figurehead in many facets of his own government’s operation. Corruption runs rampant in many of the delegated ministries, often nullifying the emperor’s efforts to help his people. If you venture to the capital, it is recommended you keep your escort close, and your pocketbook closer, for it is teeming with crime, and overrun by gang wars and their assassins. News has it the Emperor is desperate to save his people from their plight, and end the corruption.
